Diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) training, which purportedly seeks to decrease prejudice, actually does the opposite.
Canadian social scientist David Haskell outlined this finding in a study with the Aristotle Foundation for Public Policy released on Feb. 12. According to Haskell, an associate professor at Wilfrid Laurier University in Canada’s Ontario province, DEI training does more harm than good.
“A growing number of high-profile cases suggest that diversity workshops and their supporting materials regularly promote questionable claims – particularly about the overarching, malicious character of the majority population. Similarly, hostility toward those who challenge DEI claims is part of the pattern,” he wrote.
Haskell also wrote that the purported positive results of DEI training as questionable as its premise. A focus on “implicit bias, White privilege and micro-aggressions” – often the central tenets of such trainings – do not foster harmony, he continued.
“To ‘prove’ the effectiveness of DEI instruction, proponents often point to surveys conducted before and after workshops that show, following training, [that] participants are much more likely to articulate answers that align with the pro-DEI ideas. This type of methodology has drawn criticism and has proven to be unreliable.”
Haskell ultimately concluded his paper: “DEI instruction has been shown to increase prejudice and activate bigotry among participants by bringing existing stereotypes to the top of their minds or by implanting new biases they had not previously held.” (Related: DEI captures the University of Florida.)
He added that DEI training can create a sense of “isolation and demoralization” in people belonging to the “dominant” culture because they are depicted as “fundamentally depraved.” In contrast, other groups are depicted as “as important and worthwhile.”
In his study, Haskell cited the example of the late Richard Bilkszto. The 60-year-old Toronto District School Board who challenged DEI claims took his own life in July of last year. Bilkszto’s lawyer Lisa Bildy suggested that harassment he received following DEI training in 2021 directly contributed to his death, with a ruling by the Ontario Workplace Safety and Insurance Board confirming that the principal had indeed been the subject of “workplace harassment and bullying.”
Aside from individuals speaking out against DEI, Asians are often the targets of these trainings. Haskell attributed this success of Asians in the West to high rates of tw0-parent families and emphasis on hard work, higher education and personal responsibility. But because this Asian success challenges DEI doctrines of White dominance and privilege, Asians are instead lumped alongside Whites.
“White was the catch-all term for oppressor,” he told the Epoch Times in an interview. “And so the better you do, the more oppressive you are.”
Haskell continued that the Black Lives Matter riots following the death of George Floyd in the summer of 2020 “opened the spigot larger than ever before on DEI spending.” Despite this, he expressed hope that his analysis will empower business, government, post-secondary institutions, and public schools to reverse course.
He also mentioned that DEI trainers may sincerely believe they are doing good work – something they are well-paid to do – in spite of his study’s findings. However, the social scientist believes that proponents at the highest level use DEI instruction “to destroy the existing society.”
